Taking a cue from the chief minister of Bihar, the Congress party has announced a 33% job quota for women as part of its poll promises in the upcoming Punjab assembly elections.
The announcement was made by Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh, highlighting the need for empowering women in the state. Apart from 33% reservation in government jobs, congress has also promised more seats for women applicants in educational institutes and in allotment of commercial and residential plots across the state.
A detailed framework is currently under preparation as the party gets ready to release its election manifesto for the poll-bound state. For the state which is fighting a poor gender ratio, the Congress is hopeful that reservation for women will touch a chord among the women voters in the state. Media reports suggest that the Congress’ announcement comes after a deep study of similar promises made by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar during the Bihar state polls.
