Speaking to party cadres at the BJP Mahila Morcha Sammelan, Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has stressed that the Narendra Modi government has done more for women compared to any other government in the history of India. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme to save the girl child and the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana were some of some of the steps taken by the government that were highlighted.
While some baby steps taken by the Modi government in terms of ensuring the welfare and security of women and girls in India, the recent molestation incidents in public spaces on New Year’s Eve are harsh reminders that women are as vulnerable as babies when it comes to personal safety. Women have not been able to step beyond the cradle of moral policing, unsolicited “dress codes”, and the “stay at home if you want to be safe” syndrome that Indian society has imprisoned them in.
It is time the government of the day build on its good work and take game-changing measures to ensure safety of the Indian ‘naari’, enabling them to step out of this cradle.
