Rural Women Entrepreneurs rustle up a Rs. 70-cr business


When it comes to entrepreneurship, the women of Uttarsanda—a small village in Gujarat—are tying on their aprons and leading the way. Located in Kheda district at a distance of 76 km from the state capital of Gandhinagar, Uttarsanda is known for its flourishing snack business.

Run majorly by women, these businesses of Uttarsanda have baked a success story by selling snacks worth Rs 70 crore every year.During the Diwali season alone, the village snacks industry has managed to sell more than 700 tonnes of snacks, 50% of which was exported.

The women entrepreneurs of Uttarsanda village have been covered by the mainstream media acknowledging their sheer hard work and dedication to run a profitable business for years. Snacks such as papad, mathiya, and cholafali have been able to usher in sales worth Rs. 70 crore on an average annually.

As the rest of the economy has demonetization-induced hiccups, these businesswomen of Uttarsanda have shown they have the chutzpah to cook up success soaked in confidence and passion.
